Here at Old Norse Paganism being Norse or practicing the Norse Religion isn’t complicated or political; it’s simply falling in love with the Gods, the myths, the culture, the practices, and the traditions of our Norse Ancestors. We’re ordinary people with ordinary lives and ordinary problems, coming together for extraordinary experiences in the presence of the Norse Gods. No magic answers or secret formulas only pure simple faith and trust in the Gods!

Old Norse Paganism also coming to be known as ONP, seeks to improve the religious well being of the Norse Community, Norsemen, and women. We aim to provide a safe place for like-minded individuals to share their love for the Gods as inspired by Norse mythology, history, traditions, practices, and histories as we know them.

Who Is Old Norse Paganism?

Frequently Asked Questions

Why Norse?

Being a Norse practitioner is not the same for everyone. Much like any religion be it Christianity, Buddhism, or Judaism, people are drawn to being Norse for an assortment of reasons. Some personally choose to begin and practice Norse as a religion simply because they feel compelled to by the Gods of the Norse. Some because they think being Norse is cool. Some individuals simply because they have unwavering faith and dedication to Norse as a religion, a practice, and a lifestyle as a whole. And for others not so much. For many of us, including myself (Richard), we feel a connection to the Norse culture, Norse traditions, the Norse gods, and yes even Norse mythology which for may of us Norse practitioners is our history.

Being Norse is not about your race, your bloodline, your sex, your age, it is, however, a way of life. And much like any religion, we live every day to honor our Gods, and being Norse or practicing Norse is no different.

So there isn’t just one answer that can be explained as a definitive to the question of why Norse? Practicing Norse Religion is a choice much like any choice you make regarding your faith. I’d say if you feel drawn to practicing Norse paganism as a religion, there is a reason and it should not go ignored as it should not for any reason, no more than it should for any religious calling you may have.

The Meaning of Norse?

According to the dictionary, Norse by definition is a Norwegian language and refers to Norwegians and Scandinavians. However, for many of us that practice Norse as a religion, it is much deeper than that.

I will use myself as an example. I have been practicing Norse for more than 15 years. And over those years I have come to the conclusion that being Norse is more than being rude, arrogant, and generally disrespectful. In fact, regardless of how Norse or Vikings are portrayed on various tv shows and movies we generally seem to have qualities that are rarely displayed in modern media as a whole.

I cannot speak and will not for anyone else that practices Norse, other than to say that I rarely have witnessed the ugliness that represents Norseman on television. For me (Richard) it’s about having a core set of values and beliefs in the Gods and what is right versus what is wrong. As an example, I am a man of my word. If I tell you I am going to do something, you can count on it beings done and nothing will interfere or stop me from living up to my word, (its called Honor). Now that’s not to say that occasionally there arent outside circumstances that may put a delay on what I said I would do, but inevitably I get it done! For me, that is one of the main characteristics of being Norse. Its called having some honor, integrity, respect, and loyalty, that is NORSE!
