Good evening everyone. I wanted to discuss “What Does It Mean To Be Norse?”, this week. The reason is that the gods have shown me a path that each of us should strive to walk. We all know that being a True Norse practitioner is more than putting on a facade and that for those of us that are True Norse Pagans that we exhibit morals and values like Honor, Integrity, and loyalty, as seen in Odin’s Wisdom: Pretender VS True Norse.
But the question is “What does it mean to be Norse?”
Where to Find Answers
As sources for what I believe the 3 Answers to be to this single question, I feel I need to elaborate on it a bit. Understand though that all of my answers to this question may not be identical to those that you may give. But they should be very similar if your a true Norsemen or woman. My number one source for an answer to this is simply my experience and time spent reading and studying a vast assortment of Norse related texts.
As a second source for the answers to this question are the reading materials, videos, movies, and audiobooks I have spent time studying over the last 16 years. You can see a large number of these books and study materials in our Digital Library. Keep in mind there are a number of amazing books and study materials that we do not currently have within our library but we are working towards it.
Finally, the third source for my answers to this exceptionally complex and difficult question is the way the gods themselves allow me to interpret my Norse relationships, the materials studied, and experiences I have had and continue to have in my day to day life. I also believe my unwavering faith in the Norse gods plays a significant role in the answer to this question as well!
So what are the Answers?
Let us start with the most basic answer. What is means to be Norse is first having the ability to recognize the Norse gods and have unconditional faith in them that they will guide you each day as you walk the path of being a Norseman or women. If you find it to be difficult to recognize or have an unyielding faith in the Norse gods then you are not Norse and do not have what it take to even begin what it means to understand what it means to be Norse.
Not only will you recognize and have absolute faith in the Norse gods but you will strive to exhibit the behaviors of our Norse ancestors and even the gods, every day! The best place to learn of Odin’s expectations is in the Havamal: Words of the High One. It’s here that you will literally see that Odin has outlined the way we should behave as a Norse People.
You will find over time it is easy and comes naturally to exhibit these behaviors. What behaviors am I speaking of you ask? A fundamental behavior would be doing everything in your power to maintain an honorable life, one that you could be proud of and that the gods too would be proud of. In my mind being honorable and exhibiting honor is the foundation of the house of the Norse Religion.
Building on the foundation of honor there would be other morals and values like integrity, loyalty, respect, honesty, selflessness, and many other amazing morals and values.
And finally, your personal experiences impact your beliefs and thought in the answer to this question. Because each of us is different and had different experiences we will not all have the same exact thoughts and beliefs.
The Impact on Daily Life
As you go through life you will find that things seem to be easier to deal with and that you will deal with various situations and daily events in a different manner than others or even what you used to. I’m not saying that you will not encounter problems in life. That would be a blatant lie and to be real having problems in our lives are lessons to be learned from. But what I am saying is it will change the way you face these lessons and problems in the way you let them affect you spiritually and mentally.
Next week we will have a very special episode that will feature my partner for Old Norse Paganism and dear friend Erik Dulany. We will have a great conversation that you will not want to miss out on.
As Always we love you and may the gods bless you all and keep you and your families safe. Until next time have a wonderful week.
