Wow, I can say that I am really excited about this News Story. What has got me so wound up? Have you not heard about it yet? In June the first excavation of a Viking ship in more than 100 years will be taking place. This ship is known as the Gjellestad Ship.
The Gjellestad Ship
This ship was first discovered a little over a year ago from my understanding. But the reason I am so excited about this amazing historical bit of news is due to the amount of information that will be gained will prove to be priceless. We will gain more detail and information about how our ancestors lived and died. Do not forget there could be a massive number of preserved artifacts that will be able to help educate us on the facts and history of our ancestors.
Because of the technology we have today, we will be able to preserve more information than ever before. Why? How? This is all possible because of a new technology known as Lidar.
What is Lidar?
Lidar in its earliest form was available in the 1960s. However, today that same system has been upgraded and modified and more unanimously used to geo-mapping than ever before. Its been fine-tuned if you will. So according to the American Geoscience Institute (AGI), the Lidar system uses a pulsed light or laser to map and calculate the distance below the surface. Between the laser pulses and the monitoring and control system on the surface of the ground its ability to produce an accurate map of objects buried deep below the surface of the Earth.
It is this tool and method that has been used to discover the Gjellestad Ship. However, Lidar does not have the ability to show what is contained within the ship. There could be a trove of Viking treasures as well as one or more Viking’s remains within the confines of the ship. This is what has me so excited.

I found this video on Youtube and it has been added to our liked videos as well, but I wanted to share it here with you. The amount of insight this video gives is amazing and for anyone of us that practice Norse we should all be excited about it.
Stay Tuned For Updates
We will continue to follow this story and help to keep you informed of the progress and the amazing discoveries I believe will come to light. Depending on how often updates become available we may create a category for the Gellestad Ship by itself, just to make it easier for you to keep up with.
